Great Lent – Evening Prayer (English)

Kauma

Karthaave ninne snehichavaraaya

O Lord grant good remembrance and comfort to our departed ones, and

make them worthy to stand at Thy right hand, among the blessed martyrs

who loved Thee and the holy saints who pleased Thee by their deeds.

 O Lord, Thy holy church cries aloud to Thee for her children and beseech

Thee. O Lord, may Thy people who have borne Thee by Holy Baptism attain

Thy salvation and not be condemned to the hell fire. Amen.

 Anugrahangal Niranjirikkunnavane

 O thou full of mercy renew thy creation at the resurrection

O lord comfort and absolve our departed ones who died in hope in thee and await thy coming

O Lord make them dwell in the bosom of Abraham Isaac and Jacob

May the living and the departed together cry out blessed is he who has come and is to come in the name of the Lord. Amen

O Lord may our fasting and prayers become fragrance, acceptable before you, as sweet smelling incense. Holy lent is the symbol of victory and a weapon undefeatable before the enemy.

O Lord, may our prayers be pleasing to you. May our requests enter before you as sweet smelling incense. O Lord we call upon thee, come for our help, hear our prayer and have mercy upon our souls. O Lord Jesus Christ, who received the fasting of the righteous and the saintly, accept our fasting and prayers and have mercy upon us

Moran Yeshu Meshiha

O Jesus Christ, our Lord, close not the door of Thy mercy upon our faces.

We confess, we are sinners; have mercy upon us:

O Lord, Thy love for us didst make Thee to come down to us from Thy

place, that by Thy death, our death be abolished. Have mercy upon us.

Amen

 PSLAMS 4 (Ente neethi yaya daivama…)

Bakamore, Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!

Barkamore, Thou hast given me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.

O men, how long shall my honor suffer shame? How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?

But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.

Be angry, but sin not; commune with your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.

Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD.

There are many who say, “O that we might see some good! Lift up the light of thy countenance upon us, O LORD!”

Thou hast put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for thou alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Karthu karthave

We call upon Thee, Lord our master, come to our help; Hear our petition and have mercy on our souls.

Lord of angels and watchers, Lord our Master,

Hear our petition and have mercy on our souls.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, enlighten our mind. In faith I knock at thy door, answer

me in Thy mercy

Open my eyes to behold Thy truth and worship Thy holy name. Protect my youth, as I have trusted in thy mercy.

Give us life through your blessings. Your mercy and refuge is our fortress

Give to me, Lord, a pure heart. Grant to my intellect the wisdom of salvation now Thy absolute perfection

Vest me with spiritual weapon, against the evil one. Seal me with Thy holy name and deliver my life from destruction.

I have followed Thee with love for Thy goodness,

May I not be ashamed Hover Thy right hand over me, Lord.

My Master and merciful Father I intend to belong entirely to Thee, and I adore Thee.

I have obtained the mercy and grace that I prayed for.

Like a merchant let my intellect collect the good from Thy treasures.

Give me the true book for me to read I am Thy servant, Lord, and the son of Thy handmaid. Give me life because of Thy Holy name.

I received Thy sacred body and drunk Thy precious blood; let me live by Thee.

Let Thy holy cross (+) be a fortress protecting me from deception. I have called upon

Thee and prayed to Thee, Lord.

Hover Thy right hand over me. O Good Shepherd! Make me a lamb of Thy flock.

Glory to Thy name, Father of the world and king of life; Like oblation let my Prayers

enter before Thy majesty.

Thou who hear all and accept the petitions, listen to our prayers and have mercy on us.

Kauma

O merciful God, the voice of our prayer knocks at Thy door; prevent not from Thy devotees the petitions of their needs:

We call upon Thee, O God, to assist us in our infirmities O Good one, hearken to the voice of our supplication, and grant our petitions in Thy mercy. Amen

 Mor Ephrem’s Boovooso (Njangalkulla Karthave)

Lord, Thy mercy on us cast,
Use our service, ev’ry piece,
Grant us from Thy treasure vast
Mercy, blessing and release,

Let me, Lord, before Thee stand,
Wakefully my watch I’d keep,
Should I fall to slumber’s hand,
Guard Thou me from sinful sleep

Waking, if to wrong I take,
Mercifully absolve Thou me;
Sleeping, if a sin I make,
Pardon grant in clemency.

By the + cross of Thy disgrace
Grant me, Lord, a restful sleep,
Evil dreams do Thou efface,
Wicked thoughts far from me keep.

Through the night conduct me, Lord,
Peaceful sleep give Thou to me
Lest foul thoughts in me find hoard,
Phantoms lest a terror be.

Grant Thy angel’s watchful view,
Guard my limbs without abate,
Hateful lusts in me subdue,
By Thy living flesh I ate.

While I lie and sleep in calm,
May Thy blood my keeper be.
Let my soul dwell free from qualm
In Thine image mad’st Thou me.

Overshadow with Thy hand,
Me, a handicraft of Thine,
Let me in Thy fortress stand,
Mercy shielding round be mine.

While my body silent lies,
May Thy pow’r its vigil keep,
Let my breath like incense rise,
T’ward Thy greatness in my sleep.

Let not evil touch my bed,
By Thy mother’s pleas for me,
By Thy blood atoning shed,
Satan’s harm remov—ed be.

Since Thy word abides the same,
Guarded by Thy cross I’d be;
Waking, I shall praise Thy Name,
Who didst love e’en feeble me.

Grant O Lord, a list’ning ear,
With desire to do Thy will;
Let Thy peace at eve be near,
Night Thy righteousness fulfill.

Saviour Christ, our hearts inspire,
Thee to see effulgent bright—
Thee whose honour shines as fire,
Worshipped by all sons of light.

Jesus, Saviour of the World,
Thou who dwellest in the light,
Praise we Thee for love unfurled—
Mercy, now with future bright.

Lord, our God, we give Thee praise.
Praise a thousand thousand fold
Tens of thousands praises raise,
Mercy now, till time untold.

Praise to thee, to thee be praise,
angels serve Thee and adore
Lord of Angels, we too raise.
Prayers and worship all the more

Praise to thee who art our boast,
One true God and one alone;
Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
One in three, and three in one.

Praise the Lord, who always hears,
prayers of feeble fold like us,
Who regards repentant tears,
as first‐fruits, gifts offered thus.

Earthly ones do give thee praise,
Countless as the leaves of trees.
Thee, whose glory angels raise,
serving thee as thou dost please.

Praise to thee whom angels serve
Watchers constantly adore;
Please accept our humble prayer,
Lord of angels and watchers.

Praise to the who art our boast
One true God, and one alone
Father, Son, and Spirit Pure
One in three and three in one.

Thank we thee who us dost hear
Supplications of thy weal;
And also who dost accept,
The tears of their repenting.

Lord, whom watchers always serve,
Angels constantly adore;
Earthly ones do give thee praise,
Countless as the leaves of trees.

Setting minds above the sod,
Thank we God and exalt Him;
Who exists as one true God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit

So that you may praise the Lord,
True precepts you strive after;
Flee from mortal poisons,
Such as silver, gold and wealth.

Do fasting for forty days,
Caring and feeding the hungry:
Like David, son of Jesse
pray you seven times a day

Prophets Moses, Elijah,
Fasted they for forty days;
Overcame the Lord his foe,
By his forty days of fast

Open door of grace for us,
Now accept our humble prayers;
Like those offered long ago
from deep sea and cave and fire

Thou who hearest pray’rs to Thee,
Supplications who dost heed,
Hear us reconcil—ed be,
Mercy show, and grant our need.

—PSLAMS 91—

Barekmor. He who sits under the protection of the Most High and glories in the shelter of God will say to the lord.

Barekmor. My trust is in you. God is my refuge in whom I trust

For the Lod shall deliver you from the snare which makes you stumble and from talk of vain things.

He will keep you safe under his feathers and you shall be protected beneath his wings. His truth shall enclose you as an armor

You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night. Nor the arrow, which flies by day.

Nor of the word which walks in the darkness nor of the spirit that destroys at midday

Thousands shall fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand but it shall not come near you

But with your eyes alone you shall see the reward of the wicked

Because you have made the lord your trust you have made your dwelling in the heights

Evil shall not come near you. Affliction shall not come near your tent

Because he has commanded his angels concerning you that they should keep you in all your ways

And receive you in their arms that you may not stumble with your foot.

You shall tread upon the adder and the Basilisk. You shall trample the lion and the dragon.

Because he has cried to me says the lord. I will deliver him and strength him

 Because he has known my name he shall call upon me and I will answer him. I will be with him in distress

I will strengthen him and honor him. I will satisfy him with length of days and show him my salvation

 — PSLAMS 121—

I have lifted up my eyes to the hills from where will my help come

My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth

He will not suffer your foot to slip your guardian shall not sleep

Indeed He neither slumber nor sleeps the guardian of Israel

The lord is your guardian the shall shelter you with his right hand

The sun shall not harm you by day nor the moon by night

The Lord shall guard you from all evil the lord shall guard your soul.

The Lord shall guard your going out and your  coming in. Henceforth and forevermore.

And to you belongs the praise O God Barekmor.

Prayer of Mor Severus

He who sits under the Protection of the most high, beneath the shadow of the wings of your loving kindness will say,

Protect us, O Lord, and have mercy upon us; you who hear all, hear the prayer of your servants in your loving kindness.

Grant us, O Christ our Savior an evening full of peace and a night of Holiness for you are the king of glory.

Our eyes are turned to you. Pardon our offenses and our sins; have mercy upon us both in this world and in the world to come;

O Lord, may your mercy protect us, and your grace rest upon our faces. May you Cross guard us from the evil one and his powers.

May your right hand rest upon us all the days of our lives and your peace reign among us. Give hope and salvation to the souls of those who pray to you.

By the prayer of Mary, who bore you and of all your saints, pardon us and have mercy upon us O God. Amen

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one true God:

 The Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things, visible

and invisible

And in One Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God;

begotten of the Father before all worlds, light of light, very God of very God;

begotten, not made; being of the same substance with the Father, and by

whom all things were made,

+ WHO FOR US MEN, AND FOR OUR SALVATION, CAME DOWN,

FROM HEAVEN,

+ AND WAS INCARNATE OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF

GOD, BY THE HOLY GHOST AND BECAME MAN,

+ AND WAS CRUCIFIED FOR US IN THE DAYS OF PONTIUS PILATE

AND SUFFERED, AND DIED, AND WAS BURIED.

And the third day rose again, according to His will; and ascended into heaven, and sat on the right hand of the Father, and shall come again in His great glory, to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end,

And in the one living Holy Spirit, the life‐ giving Lord of all, who

proceeds from the Father and who with the Father and the Son is

worshipped and glorified: who spoke by the prophets and Apostles, And in One, Holy Catholic (Orthodox) and Apostolic Church:

and we acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins and look for the resurrection of the dead: and the new life in the world to come.

Amen, Barekmor, + Stoumenkalos,
